It’s been said (but unsubstantiated) that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were killed in a standoff with the Bolivian military in 1908. In BLACKTHORN, Cassidy (Sam Shepard) survived, and is quietly living out his years under the name James Blackthorn in a secluded Bolivian village. Tired of his long exile from the US and hoping to see his family again before he dies, Cassidy sets out on the long journey home. It was the battle of the remakes at the box office this weekend, but in the end “The Karate Kid” walked away victorious, after beating out Fox’s action comedy “The A-Team!” “Karate Kid” far exceeded Sony’s expectations debuting at $56 Million where “The A-team” came in under what fox had hoped for but still took away a cool $26 Mill. However despite the obvious win for “the Karate Kid,” Both films contributed to a major box office boost after a weak start to the summer season. It has also been reported that this weekend’s sales were up 11 percent from last year at this time, when the box office big boys were “The Hangover” and “Up.” Both “Karate Kid” and “The A-Team” are expected to continue to do well in the coming weeks, and should definitely benefit from a strong first weekend.
